Candidate Name: Maria Sosa
Maria Sosa is a Registered Nurse who graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She grew up in Canada and relocated to Michigan in 1998. She has been employed by BayCare for eight years since relocating to Florida and is the Risk Specialist for the West Region of BayCare.
Maria’s passion has always been to provide direct patient care. She began her Nursing career at Henry Ford Hospital, in Detroit, where she provided care to the indigent population in the ER, constantly exposed to the harsh reality of the inner city, life of poverty and crime. Her passion to help this poverty stricken population grew with her years of service in Detroit. She now has 22 years of experience combined in Emergency Medicine, High Risk Labor and Delivery, Pediatrics and Post-Partum. When she relocated to Florida in 2010, she graciously accepted a part-time position with Mease Countryside Hospital in L&D and North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center.
As she eagerly volunteered her time in school activities and in events in and around the community her desire to help people grew. She is passionate about helping mothers and children and providing care and health education whenever possible. She has volunteered with her daughter’s teachers for the last 4 years, participated in the Great American Teach In and helped with fundraising efforts for the Alpha House in Tampa Bay. She also has spent several years volunteering as a Booster Club Council Member at Victory Gymnastics Training Center, where her daughter currently trains as a Level 7 USAG gymnast.
Maria is a single mother of 2 amazing daughters, Joanna (12) and Gabrielle (10) who are the inspiration for all that she has accomplished. She is no stranger to the trials and tribulations of family life and single parenthood. Despite her personal challenges she continues to provide a constant and strong maternal and nursing presence and resource in the Westchase Community to all the families that know her. Maria has had the honor of being present for the births of many children in the community and has watched them grow up. She continues to be a positive mentor for local youth and nursing students and encourages them to achieve the same success. One thing about Maria, you will always see her smiling.
